Memorial Day in Pleasanton, CA: The History

by Proforma Construction Inc, May 11, 2016

Memorial Day offers us a time to remember and a time to celebrate.

Let’s say this first: Memorial Day is a time in which we commemorate all the men and women who have died in military service for the United States of America. The reason we are able to have this holiday is because they gave their lives for our liberties. As we commemorate and give thanks, we are also given a three-day weekend, and for many it’s the unofficial commencement of summer.

Background

Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. Though it was inspired by the way the Southern states honored their dead. In 1918, after World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action—to acknowledge their sacrifice.

Originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and wasn’t called “Memorial Day” until after World War II (1945). It used to be it was celebrated on May 30th, no matter on which day it fell.

It wasn’t until 1968 that the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed to create federal holidays and make them be three-day weekends. The bill was enacted on 1971, and from there on in, it was observed on the last Monday in the month of May.

The Public Life

All non-essential Government jobs close, as do schools, businesses, and other organizations. Most public transits do not run their regular schedules, so if you’re planning a trip, focus on their holiday schedules.
