Check out these festive bug-repelling candles holders for the Fourth of July.

When it comes to the fourth of July, there’s no better way to celebrate then to host a barbecue. However, spending time outdoors can present a bit of an insect problem. Ensure that you’re well taken care of with the right tools. Check out these do-it-yourself candle holders to help keep the bugs away. Here’s what you need to know to help you get started.

Materials:

2 sheet trays

Parchment paper

3 small bowls

2 pounds white rice

Blue food coloring

Red food coloring

Rubber gloves (optional)

Citronella essential oil

4 small glass votives

4 tea candles

To get started, prepare your baking sheets. Ensure that they’re well covered with the parchment paper to protect it from the food coloring. Separate the rice evenly into the three bowls. In one bowl add the blue food coloring in another bowl add the red food coloring and leave the last bowl white.  Using a spoon (put on your gloved if you like) and mix the rice with the food coloring. Ensure that the food coloring is well distributed so that the rice is festively colored. In each of the bowls, add five to ten drops of the citronella essential oil and stir so that it’s evenly distributed. The bugs don’t like the smell of the citronella and therefore it will help to keep the bug away.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Spread the colored blue rice out onto one of the baking sheets so that it is laid out evenly. Do the same on the other baking sheet with red colored rice. Bake in the oven for an hour to set the color in place. Let the rice cool.

Assemble the votives by layering the rice in a red, white, and blue pattern of your choice. Ensure that you leave a few inches of space between the rice and the top of the votive. Place a tea light candle in the rice, and enjoy your festive Fourth of July decorations.
