Watch Out for These Summer Construction Hazards

How construction teams can stay safe this summer.

If you are working in the commercial construction industry, then you know that summer is a prime time for wrapping up long-term construction projects or catching up projects that were delayed earlier in the year.  However, it’s important to remember that working in the summer heat poses some serious risks to construction crews.  Here are some of the summer construction hazards you need to be wary of this season.

Heat-Related Illnesses

One of the major risks that your construction crew faces this summer is the risk of heat-related illnesses.  When temperatures rise about the mid-80s, the chances of developing a heat-related medical condition increase exponentially.  One of the most serious illnesses that you need to be on the look out for is heat stroke.  Heat stroke can strike rapidly and, if left untreated, could have fatal results.  Watch out for workers displaying symptoms such as high temperatures, confusion, dizziness, nausea, lack of sweat, etc.  If you do see these signs in a worker, then try to get their body temperature down and call for medical assistance immediately.

Skin Damage

Sunburn is one of the most common hazards that constructions workers face when working in the intense summer sun.  While sunburn might seem relatively minor, sun exposure can actually result in second and even third-degree burns.  Prolonged sun exposure can even lead to more serious, long-term issues such as basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and other skin cancers.  When your crew is working in the sun, make sure that they are all using sunscreen and reapplying routinely.  Additionally, you should advise them to cover up with lightweight, full-coverage clothing.  This will protect them from the sun without causing them to overheat.
