Safeguard Your Summer With These Water Safety Tips

As summer heats up here in California, we are all on the hunt for ways to enjoy the warmer weather. What better way to take advantage of it than spending a day at the beach, on the lake, or by the river? The water will provide a refuge from the heat should you need it and the perfect setting for a sunny day of fun!

So you can enjoy these warmer months without worry, here are a few summer water safety tips to anchor you through any hazards you face.

  • By The River: The warm weather is still bringing snow melt into the rivers so expect water to be moving very quickly. Even if the surface of the river looks calm, it could be tumultuous underneath so it is a good idea to wear a properly fitted life jacket if you plan to take a dip in the river’s water.
  • On The Lake: If you are heading out for a day of boating, make sure you have the gear you need: a life jacket that fits, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Never drink and drive a boat; if you plan to drink, make sure there is a designated driver. Swimming in a lake will be more tiring than swimming in a pool because of the movement of the water, so do not test your limits.
  • At The Beach: Those who are not strong swimmers should never swim in the ocean unless there is a lifeguard on duty. Be aware of rip currents that could drag you away, and make sure to protect your skin from the sun’s rays.
