Try These Squashes for Fall & Winter

Squashes are an incredibly underrated food that deserves more love.

Pumpkins are arguably the most popular of the squashes. There are, however, many different kinds of squashes, but what other squashes exist and are they good? Let’s find out!

Butternut

The second-most popular squash is the beige, bell-shaped squash known as butternut squash. Its rind is unlike other squash in that it is very smooth and peels easily. It goes well with many flavors like smoky bacon, balsamic vinegar, and cinnamon!

Hubbard

The hubbard squash weighs anywhere from 8 to 20 pounds and can vary from a grayish blue to an intense orange. Its rind is hard and rubbery, but if you manage to cut through it, its flesh is both savory and sweet that is best enjoyed pureed or mashed.

Kabocha

The kabocha squash is native to Japan and is only now making its rounds through the U.S. markets. And it’s doing so with a bang. Its jade-like exterior is hard but reveals a bright orange–almost fiberless–flesh that has a honey-like sweetness to it that is delicious when baked or steamed.

Spaghetti

Spaghetti squash is a long yellow ovular squash that contains a stringy flesh on the inside. When these strands are cooked, they separate and turn into mild-tasting spaghetti-like strands–hence the name of this ovaloid squash.
