Suggestions for Mitigating Your Commercial Off-Road Vehicle Risks

Stay safe while using off-road vehicles at work.

Recently, the use of ATVs and other off-road vehicles at job sites has increased.  This is especially true at construction sites where workers want a fast way to get from one side of a worksite to the other in a short amount of time.  While these vehicles are convenient, they do come with certain risks.  If you want to stay safe while using off-road vehicles at work, then try out these suggestions.

  • Train Your Staff

Before allowing your employees to operate ATVs and other off-road vehicles, you should train them on how to use these vehicles safely.  You should require documentation that all individuals operating these vehicles are certified and have passed a safety training course.  This way, you can minimize the accidents that staff have while riding off-road vehicles.

  • Maintain Your Vehicles

You should refer to the vehicle manuals to ensure that your off-road vehicles are properly maintained.  For instance, you should specifically check that the tires, tire pressure, oil, brakes, and electrical components of your vehicles are operating as usual.  When your off-road vehicles are well-maintained, then this can prevent malfunctions that could put workers at risk.

  • Limit Access

Supervisors should not allow workers to access company off-road vehicles whenever they want, as this can lead to workers abusing this privilege.  To stay in control, supervisors should hold the keys and only check them out to employees once they are approved and wearing the proper safety gear.  Additionally, supervisors should enforce vehicle check-in times and create penalties for workers who do not turn in their vehicles or who are caught misusing company vehicles.
