A Guide to Greener Buildings

A Guide to Greener Buildings

by Proforma Construction Inc, November 21, 2016

Green building is the way of the future and the only way to reach sustainability in a world of dwindling natural resources.

When you hear about being “Green,” your first instinct may be to think about our favorite muppet, Kermit the Frog. Your second instinct may be about buildings and companies opting for a cleaner and more sustainable way of construction. Green building and sustainable development are the hottest terms in construction right now, but what exactly do they mean? We know they are good (or at least better) for the environment than traditional construction, but why and how? Here is your guide to greener buildings which may not only inform you for your next project, but also help save this planet.

Floors

Bamboo floors are now becoming popular choices in the construction field because of its resemblance to traditional hardwood floors. The biggest problem with traditional hardwood floors, is that those forests take decades or even over a century to regrow. An oak tree can take up to 120 years to fully mature! Bamboo forests can regrow in about 4 to 6 years. Their installation process also doesn’t require toxic adhesives and produces less air-polluting fumes.

Solar Panels

Carbon emissions are heating up the planet. Luckily for us, there’s a giant ball of pure energy that our planet orbits: it’s called the sun and only one second of its energy could power the U.S. for 9 million years. Solar panels are becoming cheaper and cheaper and are becoming more efficient. Investing in some now will save you the big bucks you can spend on other facets, rather than waste it on utilities.
