The Great California ShakeOut

The Great California ShakeOut

by Proforma Construction Inc, October 10, 2016

Among California’s biggest threats are earthquakes, do you know what to do if you are caught in the middle of one?

Earthquakes come without warning and, if the quake is strong enough, can wreak havoc on all structures. Earthquakes happen when the Earth’s tectonic plates rub against on another and the kinetic energy released sends shockwaves through the surface of the Earth knocking down towers, tables, and shelves. If you live in California, dealing with an earthquake is not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when!” Here how you can prepare yourself for a future Californian earthquake.

Remove all items from over your bed and definitely over your head. Secure all decorations, light fixtures, and furniture to avoid injuries–things like book shelves and TV stands need to be secured to the walls with anchors to avoid them falling on you and causing more damage.

Your emergency kit should be packed before an earthquake strikes. All emergency kits need to include: enough food and water for every member of your family for 3 days, a radio, a flashlight, extra batteries, necessary medication, and a cellphone charger. If you have a pet, don’t forget about their water and food!

Have an emergency plan. If a disaster were to strike, do your family and friends know where to meet and how to get in touch if all communication is destroyed?

What do you do if you’re inside? Drop onto all fours; cover yourself under a table and protect the back of your head and neck; hold onto the table so it doesn’t slide away from you and leave you exposed.

If you’re outside, drop and move away from tall structures that could fall and potentially injure you.
