The stress that comes from the holidays may be enough to ruin them for you, so be sure to take these tips into consideration.

As joyous as the holiday season can be for almost everyone, it may also bring a few unwelcome guests–stress and depression. It comes at no surprise either. The holidays present a dizzying array of chores for everyone like parties, shopping cleaning, baking, entertaining and much, much more. But with a few practical tips on how to fight back, you can minimize the stress and actually enjoy the holidays. Here are a few tips on how to cope with the stress of the holidays.

Prevent Holiday Stress

  1. Be Realistic – Many of us place too many expectations on the holidays, a perfect setup for failure. As time moves forward, families grow and change. Hold on to a few traditions while being open to creating new ones. If your children, who are adults and have families of their own, cannot come to spend the holidays with you every year, consider sharing pictures, videos, or emails.
  2. Reach Out – The holidays are not about solitude. On the contrary, they should bring us together. Seek out community, religious, or other social events to help bring you support and companionship. Volunteering is another way you can help other while lifting your spirits and broadening your friendships.
  3. Acknowledge Your Feelings – In order to best deal with your feelings, you must first acknowledge they exist. It is okay and normal and encouraged to take time and express your feelings. You cannot force yourself to be happy–nor is bottling your feelings very healthy–just because it is the holiday season.
