What to Think About When Selecting Trees for Your Yard

Choose the right trees for your property.

If you want to boost your home’s curb appeal and increase your property’s value, then planting trees is a great way to accomplish these goals.  However, when making your tree selection, aesthetic appeal isn’t the only thing to consider.  Here are some of the factors you should account for to choose the right trees for your property.

Growing Conditions

Before you start looking at your tree options, you need to think about the weather and growing conditions that your home is subject to.  For instance, if your home is located in an area that is prone to wet weather, then you should choose a tree that can survive in cool temperatures and damp soil conditions.  Trying to make a tree grow in a climate that it is not suited for will only result in a waste of time and money, so make sure that the tree you choose can thrive in your climate.

Purpose

You also need to think about what you want your tree to do.  While your primary goal might be increasing the visual appeal of your home, trees can have other purposes as well.  For instance, they can accomplish the following:

  • Filter out pollutants
  • Reduce noise
  • Shield your home from wind
  • Shade your home from the sun
  • Create shady outdoor areas
  • Block unpleasant views
  • Increase the market value of your property
  • Reduce glare from surrounding structures
  • Minimize precipitation runoff

Once you determine what you want your trees to do, select a type of tree that has these characteristics.

Health

Once you have decided what type of tree to plant in your yard, you need to know how to tell a healthy tree from a dud.  When choosing a tree to plant, look for the following characteristics:

  • Strong trunk
  • Firmly attached branches originating from separate points on the tree
  • A balanced spacing of branches
  • Lack of intertwined growth
  • Strong root system encased in an appropriately sized container or rootball
  • Absence of disease and/or damage

Carefully weigh these considerations to choose the right trees for your property.  Are you looking for assistance with a commercial construction project?  If so, then contact your Pleasanton contractor at Proforma Construction.   Serving Pleasanton and the surrounding California area, our highly-trained team is ready to make your commercial construction dreams a reality.
