Here are some of the most incredible construction accomplishments in history.

While many of us think about construction in terms of giant machinery and towering skyscrapers, there have been a multitude of fantastic construction achievements completed with manpower alone.  Here is a list of some of the most incredible construction accomplishments in history.

1) Stonehenge, 3100 BC

Stonehenge is one of the oldest pre-historic monuments in the world.  While the mysterious structure is believed to have gone through several iterations, today, Stonehenge consists of giant stones arranged in a circular layout.  The largest stones weigh up to 25 tons and stand 30 feet tall while the smaller stones weigh around four tons.  How these massive stones were lifted and put into place remains a mystery even today.

2) Pyramids of Giza, 2550BC-2490 BC

The Pyramids of Giza were created to act as tombs for the Pharaohs of Egypt.  The first pyramid was erected around 2550 BC and stands at an amazing 481 feet tall and consists of a whopping 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 and 15 tons.  What makes the Pyramids even more astounding is that the blocks were transported from over 500 miles away by human hands.

3) Great Wall of China, 770 BC-1644 AD

Built over the span of 6 dynasties and measuring 13,170 miles, the Great Wall of China has the longest history of any construction feat ever.  When the wall was first built, soldiers, POWs, criminals, and common people used a technique called “hangtou.”  This technique involved pouring gravel and earth into wooden molds and compacting it until the wall met the desired height and density.  In the 14th century, the Ming Dynasty pursued more sophisticated building techniques involving large bricks, blocks of granite, and giant rocks that allowed the Great Wall to reach a height of 25 feet and a width of 15-30 feet.
