The highly popular hot sauce can be made into a delicious dipping sauce that is spicy, but won’t leave you feeling like your mouth is filled with lava.
Sriracha has become a highly successful hot sauce in the U.S. over the past few years. While spiciness is clearly subjective, for some Americans, it’s still “like, SO spicy.” Using it alone in a dipping sauce, while tasty to some, is outright nonsense for others. There is a way to compromise for your summer party. Here are the ingredients and directions for creating a delicious Sriracha sour cream dipping sauce.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup light mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup reduced fat sour cream
- 2 teaspoons Sriracha sauce
- Add in all ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth
- (This goes great with waffle sweet potato fries!)
Why do spicy things feel “hot”?
Ever wonder why Sriracha sauce, or any other spicy thing, makes your mouth feel like it’s a volcano?? The answer lies in capsaicin and how easily our brains can be fooled! Capsaicin is a molecule that is found in all things spicy that attaches itself to a protein in your mouth. This activated protein causes the same receptors we use to detect heat to send a signal to our brains, basically telling it, “FIRE IN THE MOUTH!!!” A similar effect can be found when we pop in a mint and feel the sudden rush of winter in our mouths, only instead of capsaicin, it’s menthol.
