Prevent Theft on Your Construction Site

Prevent Theft on Your Construction Site

by Proforma Construction Inc, April 6, 2017

Your construction site is likely empty at night, so how can you prevent theft during these dark and unmonitored hours?

The theft of equipment and raw materials from construction sites is becoming a real issue, even in the days of digital video monitoring. How big is this issue? Construction companies together reported that it accounted for over $1 billion in annual losses and other costs. The numbers have been growing by 10 percent every year since 1996 and are expected to continue. Here are a few tips on how to prevent theft on your construction site.

The problem goes beyond theft. Companies then have to pay to replace equipment or rent to keep the projects on schedule. Delays cost money, and lots of it. Here are a few tips on how to prevent theft on your construction site.

 1. Keep Jobsite Well-Lit

Thieves count on the protection of the shadows to keep them hidden. Keep in mind that most construction thefts are committed by employees who know their way around the site. Taking away the safety of darkness makes them feel like they are being watched, and may target an easier site.

2. As a Boss, Be Present

Your employees should know that you are always observing them. You can do so by commenting on the progress of a certain job that teams or individuals are doing. Hold regular meetings to congratulate your employees on a job well-done. If your employees know that you are not aloof, it makes it harder to steal from you.

3. Only Order What You Need

It is important that you only have what you need. Keeping extra supplies can attract thieves.
