How to Keep Your Strawberries from Molding

by Proforma Construction Inc, August 1, 2016

It almost always seems to be a race against the clock when you purchase strawberries, but there is a way you can keep your strawberries from molding.

You’ve just returned from a long day at work and all you want to do when you get home is open your container of delicious strawberries and scarf them down. Unfortunately, when you get home and open the container, you’ve realized that the dreaded mold has gotten to them before you could. As you curse the heavens, you wonder if there is anything, short of magic, you could have done to prevent this moldy disaster. Luckily, for you, you don’t need magic! Here is how you can keep your strawberries from succumbing to evil and molding.

The secret ingredient isn’t Elvish magic, it’s simply vinegar (and science)!

Next time you purchase strawberries, wash them in a bowl filled with 1 part vinegar and 8 parts water. You’ll start to notice that your strawberries don’t mold and they’ll also last much longer, perhaps even two weeks! To get rid of the nasty vinegar taste that may linger in your strawberries, you can rinse them afterward.

The science behind vinegar lies in its composition. Vinegar is composed of mainly water (H2O), and acetic acid (CH3COOH) and other trace chemicals. Acetic acid kills the fungal spores and bacteria that have made your strawberries their home. The reason they kill bacteria and spores is because acetic acid is the excreted waste of bacteria, and it suffocates them. It’d be like putting a human being in a container filled with carbon dioxide (CO2), a waste the human body exhales.
