3 Risk Management Tips for Bad Weather Travelling

Learn how you can stay safe while travelling in bad weather.

While those of us living in the state of California tend to experience milder winters, you may be travelling into more extreme weather conditions this holiday season.  Luckily, there are some steps that you can take to stay safe during your holiday travels.  Here are three tips you should try to stay safe while travelling in bad weather.

1) Book the Earliest Flight Possible

While the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn and heading over to the airport sounds nightmarish, taking this precaution can actually save you a lot of grief.  Generally, early morning flights are less likely to be affected by bad weather.  This means that there’s less of a chance of your flight getting cancelled or delayed.  Additionally, if your early-morning flight does get cancelled, your odds of finding another flight on the same day are much better than those who booked a later flight.

2) Check the Weather Before Your Travel

Whether you are flying or driving, it’s important to anticipate major weather events before they hit.  Travellers often wait until a storm hits to start adjusting their travel plans.  However, this is too late as hundreds of other travellers will be trying to adjust their flight arrangements or driving routes.  Rather than waiting till the last second, make sure you are keeping a close eye on developing weather conditions and change your travelling plans along with these evolving weather patterns.

3) Strategically Make Hotel Reservations

If you are flying and suspect that you might have to stay somewhere overnight, then make sure you book a hotel room ahead of time.  For instance, if you have a connecting flight leaving out of a city that’s notorious for bad weather, then book a hotel in that area when you buy your tickets.  You can always cancel your reservation if you don’t need it, but if you do happen to get delayed, then you won’t have to compete with all the other disgruntled passengers who are rushing around and trying to book a room at the last minute.
