Learn how to Avoid These Common Emergency Plans Mistakes

by Proforma Construction Inc, March 17, 2016

Have emergency plans for emergency situations.

According to a study done in 2012, approximately 75 percent of employees do not believe that their company is well-prepared to withstand a natural disaster. Prove your employees wrong by preparing them and your business for the worst scenarios. Emergency planning is something that could save the lives of your employees and shouldn’t be taken lightly. When constructing your emergency plans, avoid these 4 common mistakes.

  1. Not conducting fire drills. We’re not saying you should surprise your employees with a surprise fire drill every day, but conducting fire drills is an important precaution. They should be practiced at least twice a year. These drills are best executed if the fire blocks different exits each time.
  2. Ignoring communicable diseases. Outbreaks of flus and other communicable diseases can pose a major threat to those in your office. Especially if some employees have weak immune systems. Companies can limit the spread of disease by encouraging employees to take sick days.
  3. Providing inadequate shelters for earthquakes or tornadoes. Companies based in high-risk areas for these natural disasters should always have shelter to protect those in the building. If your employees don’t know where to go, the only outcome will be chaos.
  4. Plan for toxic materials. Chemicals can cause burns, and other serious injuries if not disposed of correctly. Having the right precautions and holding proper tutorials about dealing with hazardous chemicals can mean the difference between healthy employees and dead employees. Gloves, safety goggles, and proper uniforms are all important. Also, don’t underestimate the value of working in a properly ventilated room.
