Winter Construction Safety Tips

Here are some tips from your Pleasanton contractor on how to stay safe during a winter construction project.

Winter in general can be a brutal time.  However, it poses a more extreme risk for those in the construction industry.  If you are working on a construction job this winter, make sure you are taking the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your crew safe.  Your experienced Pleasanton contractor offers you these tips to help you stay safe this winter.

1) Know the Signs of Injury and Illness

It’s important to teach your workers and supervisors about the signs of winter-related injuries and illnesses.  For instance, if you notice that a worker is shivering, experiencing a loss of coordination, or has slurred speech, then these could be signs that they are suffering from hypothermia.

2) Require Appropriate Attire and Equipment

Make sure that your workers are wearing the proper clothing and have the appropriate gear to work safely.  This will be based on the temperature, the weather conditions, and the length of activity.  You should encourage workers to dress in layers, including a top layer that repels moisture and a moisture-wicking base layer.  Waterproof boots with extreme tread and gloves with grips are also important pieces of clothing.

3) Remove Ice and Snow Before Working

Finally, construction workers face enough risks without the added threat of icy and snowy conditions.  Before work begins, make sure you remove as much snow and ice as you can.  Use salt to melt snow and ice down and pour sand or cat litter to provide traction in areas where ice is persistent.  Though this is time consuming, this will help your workers avoid a nasty slip.
