Reasons Why Weather Delays are a Big Deal in Construction

Here’s why weather delays are something to worry about.

While an extreme weather event such as a hurricane or fire is obviously something to worry about, did you know that ordinary weather delays can also impact your commercial construction project?  Here are some of the ways that regular weather conditions can negatively impact the progress of your project.

Cold Weather

When temperatures are too low, then it can affect the cement that you are using in your project.  Cold weather slows down the cement hydration process, which in turn compromises its bond strength.  You can reduce the effect of cold weather by adding more sand or lime to the mixture.  This will create a stiffer mortar mixture that will dry better in the cold conditions.

Hot Weather

Hot temperature has the opposite effect on your mortar, causing water to evaporate too quickly.  This rapid loss of moisture will also negatively affect the bond strength of the mortar.  You can mitigate the effects of hot weather by keeping your cement mixture out of the direct sunlight and my wetting bricks before you lay them.

Wet Weather

Working in rainy conditions poses significant risks to your employees.  Wet weather can make scaffolding slick and dangerous to maneuver and the chance of a lightning strike also places your workers at risk.  Additionally, wet conditions make it impossible to work on your project.  Even worse, work cannot resume until the structure dries completely.  This could set your project back by days and even weeks.

Windy Weather

Windy conditions also pose a hazard for your workers.  They must know which equipment can be safely used in such conditions, and they must be cautious as wind speed increases with height.  In extremely windy conditions, equipment such as cranes can fall, causing injury or even damage to your project.

These are how relatively ordinary weather conditions can negatively impact your construction project.  If you want your commercial construction project to go smoothly, then trust the experienced team at Proforma Construction.  Serving Pleasanton and the surrounding California area, our highly trained and experienced team is ready to make your commercial construction dreams a reality.
