St. Patrick’s Day is a fun day to celebrate with your friends, and here are some facts with which you can wow your friends.

If you have big plans for St. Patricks’ Day, make sure you pair them with these fun facts about that very holiday. You can always surprise your friends throughout the night with your knowledge about St. Patricks’ Day with these fun and delightful facts.

  1. ST. PATRICK WASN’T EVEN IRISH
Contrary to popular belief, Patrick was not Irish. HE was born to Roman parents in the late fourth century in Scotland or Wales.
  2. BLUE WAS ST. PATRICK’S COLOR
Green was not a color that St. Patrick wore, instead he wore a light shade of blue that was actually called “St. Patrick’s blue.” The green color only became associated with the holiday after it was linked to Irish independence in the late eighteenth century.
  3. ALCOHOL WASN’T ALWAYS SYNONYMOUS
For most of the twentieth century, St. Patrick’s day was a highly Catholic holiday in Ireland. This meant that the entire nation’s businesses, including pubs, were closed on March 17. In 1970, however, it was converted into a national holiday and the stouts and draughts started flowing.
  4. SHAMROCKS SERVE A PURPOSE
Ever wonder what the three-leaf clover had to do with St. Patrick’s Day? According to Irish legend, the saint used the three-leaf clover as a metaphor to describe the Holy Trinity when he first introduced Christianity to Ireland.
  5. FEMALE LEPRECHAUNS DON’T EXIST
Ever wonder where the leprechaun’s wives are? In traditional Irish folklore, there are no female leprechauns, only little ginger guys who seek wealth above all else. As times change and progress, of course, many started to design female characters as to include everyone.
